Operative Endoscopy also known as Minimal Access Surgery is one of the recent
advances in Gynaecology and today is the gold standard for the diagnosis and
treatment of a wide range of gynaecological problems. It involves very small or
no incisions on the body, resulting not only in quicker and less
painful postoperative recovery but also in minimal adhesions (one of the
biggest worries of a surgeon) due to reduced tissue handling and tissue
drying. Besides sophisticated instrumentation, specialised training
is required to perform endoscopic surgery and cases need to
be judiciously chosen so as to provide the maximum benefit . However, it
is also important to appreciate that endoscopy cannot totally replace
conventional surgery and it requires a prudent gynaecologist to choose cases
suitable for endoscopy. Gynaecological endoscopy uses either laparoscopy,
hysteroscopy or a combination of both.
